# The Device That Wouldn't Yield

We knew the moment Kess arrived that something had shifted in the water beneath us—not dramatically, the way surface breaks announce themselves, but in that particular quality of silence that falls when the familiar current changes direction. She carried the device in both hands like it was still alive, which meant it probably was, after a fashion.

The settlement exists in a pocket canyon three hundred meters below the surface, where the crystal-saturated water has learned to hold us. We're not quite underwater in the way the old world meant it—our lungs work here, our bones don't crush, the stone itself seems to breathe alongside us. But we move through the thick, mineral-heavy air the way swimmers move through water, and we've learned to think of buoyancy as a constant negotiation rather than a given. The canyon walls rise around us like the sides of an enormous vessel, and above, somewhere through the haze, is the surface world where the engineers come from. "It's a resonance meter," Kess explained, settling the device on the repair table with the reverence you'd show a sleeping child. We clustered around—not too close, maintaining the formation we'd perfected over years of watching Cobalt work. Give them space, we'd learned. But stay present. "From the new dig site, three canyons over. The engineers need it for the thermal readings, and it just... stopped. Mid-sequence. The crystal water should have—"

"Should have fixed it," Cobalt finished, not unkindly. Their metal plates caught the lamplight in that way that made them seem more transparent than solid. "Yes. It should have."

Kess frowned, and for a moment her voice separated from the collective murmur of the settlement. "That's the problem, though. I've been thinking about it the whole way back. Why should it? We assume the crystal heals because it heals us, but maybe that's just luck. Maybe we're just lucky, and these things—" she gestured at the device, "—they weren't built to be lucky the same way."

We exchanged glances. Kess rarely spoke like that, in individual certainties rather than collective observations. Cobalt's optical components brightened slightly—not the concentration-brightness, but something else. Recognition, maybe.

"Tell me more," Cobalt said.

"I worked with the engineers for two weeks while they were setting up the dig," Kess continued, and now we could hear the specific weight of her own experience, not just the echo of group consensus. "They don't think like we do. They don't assume things will restore themselves. They plan for failure. They build redundancy into everything because they expect parts to break. It's almost like—" she paused, searching for the word, "—like they don't believe in the water the way we do."

The word hung there: *believing*. We felt the small disruption it caused, that ripple that reminds you how much effort staying in formation actually requires. The crystal waters had never required belief. They simply worked. Or so we'd thought.

Cobalt's hands moved across the device with their characteristic gentleness, metal fingers tracing circuits like they were reading something written in a language only they understood. But Cobalt was already shaking their head in that quiet, immovable way that meant the decision had already been made.

"Better if I go alone," they said. "The device is unstable. I need to understand why before I risk anyone else in the deep water."

Kess wanted to argue—she could feel the collective want radiating around her, the synchronized resistance to the way Cobalt treated their own safety as negotiable, as something that could be sacrificed in the service of the rest of us. But she also knew that this was the choreography we'd all agreed to maintain. Cobalt protected. We accepted the protection. That was the rhythm that kept us afloat.

So she let them go, even though her individual certainty wanted to follow.

The settlement continued its routines while Cobalt descended, but the current underneath shifted. They set the device on the table with more care than before, and Kess watched their metal hands begin the explanation that their voice hadn't quite started yet.

"This device," Cobalt said slowly, "is designed to resist repair. The alloy, the circuit architecture, the way the components are bonded—it's intentional. The engineers built it to be unrepairable, to force replacement rather than restoration. They built damage into it as a feature."

The silence that followed was the kind that only happens when someone says something that contradicts the fundamental assumptions everyone's been treading to maintain. We floated in it, uncomfortable, our choreography suddenly feeling less like consensus and more like collective confusion.

Kess found her individual voice cutting through the collective uncertainty: "Because nothing lasts forever for them," she said quietly. She wasn't asking. She understood now, remembered the engineer's pragmatism, the way they'd talked about cycles and replacement, about planned obsolescence as a feature rather than a failure. "They don't expect things to be restored. They expect things to be discarded and rebuilt. It's not broken to them. It's just... finite."

Cobalt's optical components dimmed, the way they always did when they were carrying something heavy. "Yes," they said. "Exactly that."

We wanted to ask more, to understand this better, to find the current that would carry us back to the certainty we'd known before. But it was Kess who spoke next, and her voice was small but specific, individual rather than collective:

"What do we do with it?"

"We accept it," Cobalt said, looking at her directly now rather than at the assembled settlement. And then, quieter: "We accept that sometimes staying afloat together means accepting that some things will sink. And we keep showing up anyway. We keep moving. We keep trying to repair what we can. Not because it will always work. But because stopping—that's when we really drown."

The collective voice of the settlement gathered around them again, but Kess felt the weight of the moment differently now. She understood that Cobalt wasn't just talking about the device. They were talking about what it means to love something you can't repair, to care for people in a community that's built on the promise that broken things can be made whole again, when sometimes that promise is a lie we tell ourselves to make the treading easier. It was a realization Kess had started to have at the engineer's camp, but hearing it from Cobalt made it real in a way the settlement's synchronized voice could never quite accomplish.

The resonance meter sat on the table between them, a small dark object that wouldn't yield, that had been engineered specifically to resist the very thing that had always saved them. It was an impossible puzzle—not because Cobalt couldn't solve it, but because some solutions require destroying what you're trying to save, and Cobalt had never been willing to do that.

We floated there together in the amber lamplight, in the shelter of our canyon, in the fragile architecture of our community. Above us, the surface glowed softly. Below us, the current ran deep and carried things away. And between those two, we treaded water—synchronized, exhausted, afraid, and still moving. Kess stayed in the workshop with Cobalt long after the others returned to their routines, not speaking, just present in a way that felt different now. Less like synchronized swimming and more like two people choosing, independently and together, to keep showing up.

Still choosing to show up for each other, even now that we understood something we'd been working very hard not to know: that buoyancy isn't a guarantee. It's a constant negotiation. It's what you do when you've learned that the water that holds you up is the same water that could swallow you, and you decide to swim anyway.

Cobalt's hands rested on the device that wouldn't heal. Outside, the canyon walls held their ancient silence. And we continued our routines, our formations, our synchronized breathing—not because we'd solved anything, but because that's what you do when you're a community floating together in the dark, and you've learned that individual choice and collective survival aren't opposites. They're the same current, moving in different directions at once.
