# Jalisa and the Quiet Stones
Listen close now. We're going to tell you about Jalisa, and a very special railway station where something surprising happened. Snuggle in. Here we go...
---
The railway station was humming. *Hummmmm, hummmmm, hummmmm.*
Can you hear it? That's what Jalisa heard when she walked across the red platform. The stones under her feet were singing—soft and warm like a lullaby. *Shhhh-hummmmm. Shhhh-hummmmm.* The red stones sang their gentle song, and Jalisa's clever eyes watched the rails gleam in the golden light.
She loved this place. Every platform had its own color, and every color had its own song. The yellow platform hummed in the morning. The green platform hummed at night. And the blue platform? The blue platform sang the sweetest, gentlest warning song when danger came close...
*Hummmmm. Hummmmm. Hummmmm.*
But today, something was different.
Jalisa was walking, walking, walking across the station. Her pack was snug on her back—pat, pat—filled with all her exploring things. She noticed everything, the way she always did. A dropped button (round like a moon, she thought). A scrap of ribbon, pale blue. A tired traveler sitting on a bench, looking worried.
And then she walked toward the blue platform.
*Silence.*
The humming had stopped.
Jalisa's bright, watchful eyes grew wider. She stopped walking. Her head tilted like a curious bird listening for something far away. The blue platform was *not* singing. The protective stones were *not* humming their warning song.
*Silence.*
"That's strange," Jalisa whispered to herself. "That's very, very strange."
She stepped closer to the blue platform, moving slow and careful. And there, waiting on the smooth blue stones, she saw them: a group of smaller travelers. Three of them, holding hands. They were waiting for their train, looking out into the thick fog that had rolled across the station like a cozy blanket—but a blanket that was hiding something.
"Are you waiting for the evening train?" Jalisa asked, her voice warm and gentle.
A little one with a round face looked up. "Yes," they said. "It should be here soon. The humming will tell us."
Jalisa's heart went *boom-boom-boom* with understanding. They were depending on the song. They were waiting for the protective hum to tell them the train was coming. But the stones were silent. *Silent, silent, silent.*
And in that silence, Jalisa's quick, clever mind sprang into action.
She could feel it. She could *feel* something in the air—a vibration so deep and far away that the stones couldn't quite reach it yet through the fog. A train. Coming. Getting closer. Getting *closer.*
But the blue platform's song was gone.
Jalisa's gentle heart understood what the silence meant: the protective stones were tired. They needed help. And the little travelers needed *her*.
"Come," Jalisa said, her voice like a soft pat-pat-pat. "Come with me. Right now. It's time to move."
"But our train—" one of them began.
"I know," Jalisa said. She took their small hands in hers—so small, so trusting. "I know about your train. But we need to walk together to the yellow platform. Now. Trust me."
The little ones looked into Jalisa's bright, watchful eyes and saw something there: kindness. Courage. Truth. So they walked. *Pat-pat-pat.* Their feet moved across the red platform, away from the blue one that was trying so hard to warn them, even in its silence.
Jalisa walked them steady and sure, her pack bouncing gently on her back. One-two-three steps. One-two-three steps.
And then—
*WHOOOOOOSH.*
A great wind came rushing through the station. The fog swirled and danced. And through it came the sound of wheels on rails, getting closer, closer, *CLOSER.*
The train was coming.
Jalisa and the three little travelers had just reached the yellow platform when—
*SCREEEEEECH. WHOOOOOOSH. CLICKETY-CLACK.*
The train came barreling through the fog like a great silver dragon. It rushed past the blue platform—the silent, tired blue platform—with a sound so loud it shook the whole station.
*Boom. Boom. Boom.*
But Jalisa and the little ones were safe. Safe on the yellow platform. Safe where the stones were still singing their protective hum.
The little ones looked at each other with wide, wondering eyes.
"You knew," one of them said to Jalisa. "You knew the train was coming."
Jalisa knelt down beside them, her eyes warm as golden light. "The stones told me," she said softly. "They told me by being quiet. Sometimes the silence is just as important as the song. Sometimes silence means we need to listen *even harder.*"
She patted each of their round little heads—pat, pat, pat—and they felt safe. So very safe.
The train slowed down. The fog began to clear. And from the station came a gentle hum—*hummmmm, hummmmm*—as all the colored platforms began to sing again. The red platform. The green platform. And yes... the blue platform too.
*Shhhh-hummmmm. Shhhh-hummmmm.*
The blue stones were singing again, rested now, ready to protect the next travelers who would pass through.
Jalisa stood up, her pack settling comfortably on her back. She had done what she needed to do. The smaller ones were safe. The lost and worried ones had found their way.
"Where will you go next?" asked the little one with the round face.
Jalisa looked out at the station—at all the platforms, all the colors, all the songs and silences that kept everyone safe.
"I don't know yet," she said with a gentle smile. "But that's the best part about a railway station. Every platform leads somewhere new. And I'll be here to listen—to the songs and the silences—until someone else needs help."
She waved goodbye, her clever eyes already noticing the next thing: a worried traveler on the green platform, looking lost. And Jalisa, with her heart full of courage and her gift for understanding what others needed, walked toward them.
*Pat-pat-pat.*
The stones hummed beneath her feet.
*Hummmmm. Hummmmm. Hummmmm.*
And in that warm, golden light of the railway station, everything was exactly as it should be.
Safe.
Humming.
Home.
---
There now. Jalisa knew what the silence meant, and she was brave enough to help. And you know what? You're brave too. Close your eyes now. Let the hum of the stations rock you gently, like the sweetest lullaby.
*Shhhhhhhh. Hummmmmmm.*
Good night.
