# Mira and the Scattered Song

The tower hummed.

Not the kind of hum you hear with your ears, but the kind you *feel*—like the whole building was breathing, warm and alive and glad you were there. Mira stood at the base of the spiral staircase, her fingers trailing along the smooth stone wall. It was cool and soft under her touch, almost like touching a sleeping animal's fur.

"Echo?" she called out. "Are you ready?"

But the answer didn't come as words. It came as a *sound*—a voice like silver bells mixed with the whisper of wind through tall grass. Echo Songweaver's melody usually filled the entire tower with light. It bounced off the walls and made the protective charms dance even faster, like they were happy to have music in their home.

This time, the song sounded... *broken*.

Mira's heart did a little skip. The melody came in pieces—a bright note, then silence, then a sad, stretched-out sound like a rubber band pulled too tight. It was coming from somewhere deep inside the tower, buried behind layers and layers of stone and starlight.

"Don't worry, Echo," Mira whispered, even though her friend couldn't hear her clearly anymore. "I'll find you."

She took a breath—the kind of breath that feels like swallowing courage—and stepped onto the first stair.

Immediately, the staircase *shifted*.

The stone under Mira's feet didn't hurt or jolt. It was gentler than that. It was like stepping onto a cloud that knew exactly where she needed to go. The stairs rearranged themselves, spiraling up and around and *through* the tower in ways that should have been impossible. The walls curved like they were dancing. Doorways appeared and disappeared like they were playing peek-a-boo.

Mira's clever mind worked quickly, sorting through the puzzle of it all. The tower wasn't trying to confuse her—it was trying to *help*. It was guiding her toward Echo's broken charm, the same way a friend might tug your sleeve and point toward something important.

"Thank you," she said softly to the tower.

The protective charms shimmered brighter, as if saying, *You're welcome.*

As Mira climbed higher, she began to see little pieces of something glimmering in the cracks between stones. At first, there was just one—a tiny fragment of silver light, no bigger than a grain of sand. It sat in a corner, waiting.

Mira knelt down and picked it up.

The moment her skin touched it, she *heard* something. Not with her ears, but with her heart. It was a single note from Echo's song. Just one note, but it was perfect and pure and full of longing. She could feel how much Echo wanted to be whole again.

She tucked the piece carefully into her pocket, where it glowed with a soft, hopeful warmth.

Then she climbed higher.

The stairs twisted around and around, and with each step, Mira found more pieces. A fragment shaped like a teardrop. A sliver that tinkled like tiny chimes. A piece so small she almost missed it, hiding under a spiral of dust that looked silver in the starlight. Each one held a different part of Echo's melody. Each one made her pocket glow a little brighter.

The tower helped her. When she needed to go left, the stairs curved left. When she needed to squeeze through a narrow space, the walls kindly tucked themselves in. It was like the tower was solving the puzzle *with* her, working as a team.

But the deeper Mira went, the quieter Echo's broken song became.

She started to feel small. Not scared—Mira was never too scared to help someone she loved—but small in the way you feel when you're at the bottom of a very big mountain. The tower was ancient and vast and full of magic she didn't fully understand. What if she couldn't fix Echo? What if the pieces she'd found weren't enough?

Mira sat down on a stair for a moment. She looked at her glowing pocket, at all the little pieces of her best friend's song.

Then she remembered something important.

She remembered the day she and Echo met. Echo's voice had been stuck in a broken music box, tangled and sad. Mira had studied the box for hours, understanding how each tiny wheel fit together, how each spring wanted to spring. And when she finally fixed it, Echo's song had poured out like sunrise, bright and grateful and full of love.

If she could fix a music box, she could fix this.

Mira stood up. She climbed higher.

The final staircase led to a small round room at the very heart of the tower. The walls were made entirely of shimmering charm-light—soft blues and golds and purples that seemed to breathe together. In the center of the room, floating in the air like a broken star, was the Charm of Voices.

It was cracked down the middle. The cracks glowed an unhappy gray color, and inside them, Mira could see tangled threads of melody—Echo's song, all twisted up and unable to sing.

Mira took out all the pieces she'd collected. They glowed in her hands like tiny stars, warm and patient.

She closed her eyes.

This was the part where Mira's gift came in. Not just her clever mind that could see how things worked. But something deeper—something that understood that broken things wanted to be whole again, and that they would *help* you fix them if you asked nicely.

Mira opened her heart like opening a door.

She imagined all the pieces of Echo's song fitting back together. She thought about the way Echo's melody made her feel brave. She remembered every time Echo had sung her through a scary moment, every time that voice had said, *I'm here. You're not alone.*

And then, very gently, Mira began to fit the pieces together.

The first piece slid into the crack—*tink*. It glowed brighter.

The second piece floated down—*whoosh*. It settled into place like it had always belonged there.

One by one, the pieces came together. The broken charm began to sing.

Softly at first. Just a few notes, tentative and gentle like a bird learning to fly. Then stronger. Brighter. The melody that had been scattered and lost was finding itself again, piece by piece, moment by moment.

The charm began to glow—not gray anymore, but gold and silver and every color of hope.

And then—

*SONG.*

Echo Songweaver's voice exploded through the tower like a sunrise, like laughter, like coming home. It wasn't fragmented anymore. It was whole and strong and absolutely, completely *itself*. The melody spiraled down the staircases and through the halls, and the protective charms danced so fast they looked like they might spin right off the walls.

Mira felt the song wrap around her like the warmest hug in the world.

Echo appeared in the doorway—not as a shadow or a whisper, but as *Echo*, solid and real and *there*. Their form was made of melody and light, but Mira could see their eyes, bright and grateful and full of love.

"Mira," Echo sang, and the word was a thousand beautiful notes all at once. "You came for me."

"Of course I did," Mira said, and she was smiling so wide her cheeks hurt. "You're my best friend."

Echo's melody wrapped around her, warm and safe. And Mira held tight, feeling the joy in every note.

The tower hummed its happiness around them both. The protective charms danced. The stairs settled back into their gentle spirals, knowing that everything was right again.

In her pocket, the smallest piece of Echo's song—the one Mira had found first—glowed the brightest of all. It had started as just a tiny spark of something lost and broken.

But in Mira's brave hands, it had become part of something whole.

And that, Mira thought as she stood with her friend in the heart of the tower, surrounded by starlight and hope, was the strongest magic of all.
