# Whisperroot and the Sad Friend

Listen close. Can you hear that? That's the forest breathing—in and out, slow and steady.

Deep in the green forest, where the sun shines through the leaves, something is wrong.

Whisperroot stands very still. Their vine-fingers shake a little. All around them, the wildflowers are drooping down. They're sad. They're not dancing and blooming like they always do.

"Tinglewhisper," Whisperroot whispers. Tinglewhisper is a small, fluffy friend who shines like starlight. "Do you feel it? Something is sad."

Tinglewhisper shivers and nods. Best friends always know when something is wrong.

Whisperroot listens to the forest. Usually, the forest is loud and happy. Birds sing. Leaves rustle. Little animals play. But now the forest is quiet. Very quiet.

"We have to find out why," Whisperroot says.

Whisperroot has always stayed in their safe glade, where it's bright and warm. Leaving feels scary. But the flowers need help. The forest needs help.

So Whisperroot takes one wobbly step. Then another.

Tinglewhisper stays close, and together they walk past tickly ferns and old rocks. They walk and walk until the forest opens up.

There's another glade here. But this one is different.

Everything is grey. The flowers here are all drooping down, sad and lonely. And in the middle, there's a fence made of cold, hard iron.

Behind the fence, Whisperroot sees something amazing.

It's a beautiful creature with shiny scales like the moon and big, bright eyes. The creature is glowing—glowing so bright and so sad that it hurts to look at.

The creature is curled up alone. It's crying.

"Oh," Whisperroot says softly.

Whisperroot walks closer to the fence. Their vine-fingers reach through the cold bars.

"Hello," Whisperroot says. "I'm here."

The creature lifts its head. Its eyes get wide.

"You... you can see me?" it whispers.

"Of course," Whisperroot says, soft and warm. "I find sad hearts. That's what I do."

"But I'm different," the creature says, and now it's shaking. "I don't belong here. Everyone was scared of me. So they put me here behind this fence. They said I might hurt someone. So now I'm all alone."

The creature starts to cry again.

Whisperroot sits right down on the grey earth. They press against the fence. Tinglewhisper does the same.

"You know what?" Whisperroot says. "You're not bad for being different. Being different is okay. Being different is good."

The creature looks at Whisperroot with hope in its eyes.

Whisperroot reaches one vine-finger toward the fence, and something amazing happens.

The fence starts to change.

Vines grow all around the cold iron bars. The fence becomes softer. It becomes something that lets light in instead of keeping light out.

"I don't understand," the creature says.

"My roots know things," Whisperroot says. "And my roots say you don't need to be locked away. You need a friend."

As Whisperroot speaks, the grey earth starts to turn green again. Colour comes back. The sad flowers start to lift up their heads.

The creature looks at the fence. It looks at their own glowing scales. And they understand.

Slowly, the creature reaches out. Where they touch the vine-covered fence, it melts away. It becomes dirt again. It becomes soft earth.

The fence opens.

The creature walks through.

And all around them, the wildflowers burst into bloom. Gold and pink and silver flowers everywhere. The whole glade fills with happy light.

Whisperroot's vine-fingers stop shaking.

The creature—whose name is Luminara—sits down next to Whisperroot and Tinglewhisper. Their glow becomes warm now, like a cozy fire.

"Thank you," Luminara says.

"Thank you," Whisperroot says. "For being brave. For letting me be your friend."

As they walk back to the bright glade together—Whisperroot, Tinglewhisper, and Luminara—the forest gets loud and happy again. Birds sing. Leaves rustle. The wildflowers bloom all around them, lighting the path home.

And this is the real magic, the kind that matters most.

The magic is this: when someone sees you're sad and doesn't run away. When someone sits with you and helps you feel better. When someone says, "You're okay. You're my friend. You belong here too."

That's the biggest magic of all.

Can you hear it? That's the sound of happy hearts. That's the sound of a new friend. That's the sound of magic growing.
